Let the Games Begin

Writer: Christopher MackayChristopher Mackay

I used to blog under a pseudonym, but that was a long time ago. I've decided to share with the world my interests in terms of Classical Studies and the teaching of Ancient Greek and Latin. I used to study Roman history, but in the past few years I've become interested in the so-called "natural" method of teaching Greek and Latin (i.e., as living, spoken idioms in which you can express your thoughts, as opposed to old-fashioned method known as "grammar and translation," which involved learning paradigms and grammatical rules, and somehow using these to convert the ancient text into English). This interest led me into the world of early-modern Latinity. I've recently edited and translated three texts from around 1500 that are previously unedited (or only partially edited). This is quite the change from poking yet against at some text from antiquity that has been examined repeatedly for literally hundreds of years.

I recently told my wife that I can't die because I have too much to do. She tells me I shouldn't worry about that. But my father's mother died of an aneurism at an age only a few years old than mine (I just turned 60, good God!). So I have to prepare for the possibility that I will have to ask God for an extension. I wonder if he's as reasonable as I am?

Anyhow, I think I'll share my thoughts about whatever strikes my fancy here. I have for a while been considering posting about word usage in Greek and Latin. It's one thing to read the words sitting there passively on the page, and quite another to figure out how to speak the ancient languages the way the ancients did!

Morituri vos salutamus, as they say!
